ABSTRACT

Background The aging of the labor force has become a global trend, and various occupational activities can affect blood biochemical indexes and increase the risk of metabolic diseases. Elderly workers are the main laborers in the solar greenhouse industry, and their blood biochemical indexes need more attention. Objective The purpose of this study is to explore the alternation of selected blood biochemical indexes and provide clues for conducting management programs of metabolic diseases in the elderly solar greenhouse workers. Methods The research subjects of the greenhouse group and the non-greenhouse group were selected from a vegetable production base in Northwest China. The elderly workers were selected from a recruited subjects pool for an earlier project by means of matching and non-matching respectively. The matching conditions were gender (consistent), age (±2 years old), body mass index (BMI) (±1 kg·m−2), education level (±1 level), smoking (consistent), and drinking (consistent). Routine clinical tests were used to detect serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC), fasting blood glucose (GLU), and albumin (ALB), and single-factor and multi-factor analyse were used to identify different indexes in matching and non-matching samples, respectively. The matching and the non-matching samples included 80 pairs of subjects and 327 subjects, respectively. Results In the matching sample set, the greenhouse group's HDLC [(1.61±0.34) mmol·L−1] was lower than the non-greenhouse group's [(2.09±0.37) mmol·L−1] (P<0.05), the level of TG/HDLC in the greenhouse group was (1.17±0.74), higher than that in the non-greenhouse group (0.78±0.47) (P<0.05), and the level of LDLC/HDLC in the greenhouse group was (1.87±0.36), also higher than that in the non-greenhouse group(P<0.05), while there was no statistical difference of the other indexes between the two groups (all Ps>0.05). In the non-matching sample set, the results of multiple linear regression analysis showed that solar greenhouse working correlated with decreased HDLC, and increased TG/HDLC and LDLC/HDLC among the elderly workers (all Ps<0.05). Conclusion Solar greenhouse working may correlate with variations of selected blood biochemical indexes in elderly workers, and the occupational health surveillance of elderly workers should be strengthened.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To study the long-term toxicity of Liqi sanjie extractum in rats after intragastric administration, and to provide reference for safety evaluation before clinical practice. METHODS: A total of 160 rats were randomly divided into control group (normal saline) and Liqi sanjie extractum low-dose, medium-dose and high-dose groups (7.828 0, 15.656 0, 31.312 0 g/kg, calculated by crude drug), with 40 rats in each group. They were given relevant medicine intragastrically once a day from Monday to Saturday. The experimental period was 120 days, and the recovery period was 30 days after the end of the experiment. General information of rats was observed, and body weight and feed consumption of rats were measured once a week. At the 61st day of administration, the end of administration and the end of recovery period, 10, 20 and 10 rats were collected from each group to observe their hematology, blood biochemistry, organ coefficient and histopathology changes. RESULTS: From 61st day to 120th day of administration, the rats of Liqi sanjie extractum high-dose group had hair loss and erection, and recovered after withdrawal of medicine. During medication, the body weight of mice in Liqi sanjie extractum low-dose and medium-dose groups increased faster than control group, while the body weight of rats in Liqi sanjie extractum high-dose group increased slower than control group. Compared with control group, the feed consumption of Liqi sanjie extractum low-dose group increased, while those of Liqi sanjie extractum medium-dose and high-dose groups decreased; the rats were recovered after drug withdrawal. On the 61st day of administration and after the end of administration, some hematological indexes, blood biochemical indexes and organ coefficients of rats in administration group were significantly different from those of control group (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The hematology, blood biochemistry and organ coefficients of rats were basically recovered after the end of the recovery period. The number of erythrocyte, hematocrit, standard deviation of erythrocyte width, albumin, globulin ratio and potassium K+ levels in Liqi sanjie extractum low-dose group were significantly lower than those in control group (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The absolute value of intermediate cells in blood of rats in Liqi sanjie extractum medium-dose group was significantly higher than that of control group (P<0.05), and the mean hemoglobin concentration, K+ and uterine coefficient in blood were significantly lower than those of control group (P<0.05). The number of white blood cells, absolute value of lymphocyte, absolute value of intermediate cells, the percentage of intermediate cells, prothrombin time and spleen coefficient in Liqi sanjie extractum high-dose group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Mean hemoglobin concentration, granulocyte percentage, albumin, alkaline phosphatase and K+ were significantly lower than those in the control group (P<0.05 or P<0.01). No abnormalities in systemic autopsy and histopathology were noticed in rats. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term intragastric administration of Liqi sanjie extractum can cause certain toxic reactions in rats, and low dose of Liqi sanjie extractum causes less and lighter toxic reactions which can be automatically recovered after drug withdrawal. It can provide reference for the determination of clinical safe dose.

ABSTRACT

For determining plasma concentrations of proteins and metabolites of rattlesnakes in captivity, 60 adult snakes, 30 males and 30 females were used. Blood was collected by puncture of the cervical paravertebral venous sinus and stored in tubes with heparin. Biochemical analyzes were colorimetrically processed using an Automatic Biochemistry Analyzer Chemwell (Awareness Technology®, Inc). The mean and standard deviation were calculated for the following constituents: total protein, albumin, globulin, albumin/globulin ratio, uric acid, creatinine, urea, cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. The values were similar to those previously reported for reptiles and snakes, with the differences observed probably due to the difference between species, climate, season and the methodology used. There were no significant differences between males and females for the parameters studied. These results may be useful in establishing normal biochemical values for conservation plans for these snakes in captivity.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The objective of this research was to determine biological and ecological population characteristics of the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) found in the southern Colombian Pacific department of Cauca. Morphometric measurements were recorded, the health status of individuals was reviewed, and blood samples were taken for a biochemistry assessment. During the seven months of the investigation, 25 hawksbill turtles were caught (16 different individuals) on the reefs of Gorgona Natural National Park. Forty-six percent of the total numbers of turtles assessed were recaptured during the study period. While no obvious health problems were noted, most animals possessed epibionts and filamentous algae covering the carapace, some parts of the limbs, as well as on their neck. Curved carapace length (CCL) showed the highest proportion of individuals were between 37 and 45 cm. Sixteen individuals captured in Gorgona Natural National Park were compared with 11 individuals captured in the coastal zone of the department of Cauca. Using the Mann-Whitney U test, a significant difference in CCL was found between these two groups; the animals from Gorgona National Park were larger than those present on the coast of the mainland (Z = -2.59, p = 0.007). Uric acid concentrations were found to be higher than previously referenced values.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this research was to evaluate the physiological and neurochemical effects in 60 (Naval Medical Research Institute) NMRI male mice strains in young adult - age average weight 25.45 ± 3.05 g, underwent six weeks at doses of the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana the Δ -9-tetrahydrocannabinol in concentrations between 4-20 %. Retroorbital blood shots were conducted to evaluate hematological and biochemical parameters before, during and post experience. Weight, water intake, food, horizontal and vertical locomotors activity include: measures such as monitored. At the end of the experience autopsy was conducted and sampling of brain regions to measure levels of amino acid neurotransmitters and dopamine. These results suggest that high concentrations of the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana consumers become more dependent with consequent physiological and neurological damage. This leads to more and more drugs is needed to produce the same effect.

ABSTRACT

The safety of babassu mesocarp (Orbignya phalerata Mart., Arecaceae), which exhibited anti-inflammatory and antithrombotic activities, was evaluated by determining the potential acute toxicity in mice. A lyophilized ethanol extract of babassu mesocarp (BME) was administered to C3H/HePas mice (10/group) in a single dose of 1000, 3000 and 5000 mg/kg, by gavage. General behavior adverse effects and mortality were determined for up to fourteen days. Selected biochemical parameters including glucose, triacylglyceride, cholesterol, urea, alkaline phosphatase and creatinine were determined by colorimetric assay. The heart, liver, spleen, kidneys and brain were weighted and evaluated macro and microscopically. The median lethal dose (LD50) of BME was greater than 5000 mg/kg. No behavior or body weight alterations were detected after the treatment. The acute treatment with BME has no effect on macroscopic and microscopic aspect of examined organs. Instead, BME increased the alkaline phosphatase and reduced the urea concentration in all groups. A significant increase on triacylglyceride was detected in the group BME1000. In conclusion, the acute treatment with high doses of BME can affect some biochemical parameters with a long lasting effect, although any change was detected at tissue level or body and organ weight.

ABSTRACT

Blood indicators are used as a tool to diagnose metabolic disorders. The present work was conducted to study the relationships among blood indicators of lipomobilization and hepatic function in high-yielding dairy cows. Two groups of Holstein cows were studied: 27 early lactation cows and 14 mid lactation cows from four different herds with similar husbandry characteristics in Galicia, Spain. Blood samples were obtained to measure beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), triglycerides (TG), and the activity of aspartate transaminase (AST) and gamma-glutamyl transferase. Cows in early lactation had higher levels of BHB and NEFA than mid lactation cows. High lipomobilization (NEFA > 400 micromol/L) was detected in 67% and 7% of early lactation and mid lactation cows, respectively, while subclinical ketosis (BHB > 1.2 mmol/L) was detected in 41% and 28% of the early lactation and lactation cows, respectively. TG concentrations were low in all cows suffering subclinical ketosis and in 61% of the cows with high lipomobilization. During early lactation, 30% of cows suffered hepatic lipidosis as detected by levels of AST. Compromised hepatic function was observed in early lactation cows as shown by lower concentrations of glucose, total protein, and urea.

ABSTRACT

The effects of the CM-95 solution, treated with static magnetic field in the interval of 0,01-0,16 T and inoculated once in a volume of 0,2 mL in Balb/c mice intraperitoneally and the same solution without magnetic treatment in animals without inoculation were evaluated, in order to value its action on the hematolologic and biochemical parameters of the cellular metabolism of these rodents from the preclinical phase. For this purpose, the blood obtained through total bleeding was processed after the therapeutic pattern, and the total and differential number of leukocytes was calculated using the blood. The extracted plasm of each sample of blood was examined in the automatic autoanalyzer equipment Hitachi 902 and among other elements, total proteins, glucose, creatinine, transaminases, calcium ions and cholesterol were determined. It was evidenced that the magnetically treated CM-95 solution produced changes in the blood leukocytes, given by a significant increase of the lymphocytes compared to the controls, as well as in the biochemical parameters, among which the values of glucose, transaminases and cholesterol were modified , but all within the normal limits for the species. Such results provide new perspectives for the possible use of this watery system, treated with magnetism, in biomedicina

ABSTRACT

Objective: To observe the effect of Rosiglitazone (RGTZ) on oxygen free radical and biochemical parameters of aged rats, so as to establish a basis for anti-aging study. Methods: The 24-month-old naturally aged SD rats were randomly divided into the control group (CONT), the RGTZ group and the caloric restriction group(CR). The RGTZ group was given intragastric administration of RGTZ (4 mg · kg-1 · d-1) and the CR group was given 60% of the diet that of the CONT group. The rats were killed 12 weeks later and the serum malondialdehyde(MDA) content, superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity and the blood biochemistry parameters were examined. Results: The blood glucose (GLU), aspartate transaminase (AST), alamine transaminase(ALT), serum creatinine (SCr), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) were within the normal range in all groups. Compared with the CONT group, blood cholesterol (CH) in RGTZ group was lower, but with no significant difference. The serum triglyceride(TG) of both RGTZ and CONT groups decreased markedly than those in the CONT group(P<0.05). The activities of SOD and MDA were improved in RGTZ and CR group compared with the control group. Conclusion: RGTZ can regulate the lipid metabolism and attenuate the oxidative damage in aged rats, indicating its anti-aging effect.

ABSTRACT

This research studied the profile of the ionogram and hepatic enzymes of healthy agoutis (Dasyprocta sp.) raised in captivity as well as evaluated the influence of gender, age and interaction gender-age. It was used a completely randomized design, in a factorial arrangement of 2 x 4 (two genders and four age groups), with three repetitions, totaling 24 agoutis. The values were determined for calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), chlorides (Cl), aspartate aminotransaminase (AST), alanine aminotransaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT). The mean values were: Ca= 7.62±2.59mg/dl; P= 3.91±1.41mg/dl; Cl= 58.63±16,45mg/dl; AST= 119.54±79.35UI/ml; ALT= 28.08±15.53UI/ml; ALP= 26.95±14.01UI/ml, and GGT= 25.34±19.44UI/ml. The value of P was larger in females and ALP in males. As the age increased, levels of ALP decreased.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the preventive and therapeutic effects of Tiaozhi Baogan Capsule (TBC) on fatty liver in rats and to explore its therapeutic mechanism. Methods SD rat models of fatty liver were set up by feeding high fat diet. After the treatment of TBC, the general physical state, liver index (the ratio of liver weight with body weight) , hepatic pathological changes , blood biochemical indices were observed in model rats. Results TBC could obviously ameliorate liver pathological changes in model rats, relieve hepatic steatosis and hepatocellular necrosis, decrease the content of malondialdehyde( MDA) and increase the vitality of superoxide dismustase (SOD) in serum and liver, lower the content of total cholesterol (TC) and low- density lipoprotein (LDL) in serum and decreae the liver index (P

ABSTRACT

Objective: To study the dietary habits and serum leptin levels of obese children and its possible association to lipids and glucose metabolism, serum lipids and C peptide (CP) in children with different body weight. Methods: 52 obese children were inquired about their favorite foods and food intake. 145 healthy children (85 boys, 60 girls), aged 6-13, with a wide range of body mass index (BMI) 14 to 30 kg/m 2, were measured for fasting serum leptin, CP, glucose, lipids (TG, TC, LDL C,HDL C), height and weight. The children were classified into three groups by BMI, i.e. normal weight group (A group), overweight and slight obese group (B group). moderate and severe obese group (C group). Results: 65% of obese children liked meat best. 38.46% of them ate most in supper. The serum leptin, CP, TG in obese children were higher than that in normal children. Leptin concentration of girls were higher than that in boys in A and B groups (P
